Traditionally the arrival of the first lambs heralded the start of Spring.
Now it really just shows the gamble some farmers take to get the first meat onto the table for premium prices. They breed them early, to birth early, in the chance there won’t be another heavy fall of snow.
And when that snow comes every year, “oh woe is me” say those farmers, “how could this have happened? Again? Poor me.”
